Description

The Chapel of Hope is located on the campus of the South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia. It was built from 1963 to 1965 by the local architectural firm Lafaye, Fair, Lafaye and Associates. A Georgian style building with a Greek revival portico, the building also includes the Kempson Center, an extension on the northern side of the chapel, which housed the Academy for Pastoral Education.

The Academy for Pastoral Education
The Academy for Pastoral Education occupies the northern wing of the Chapel of Hope. The center instructed clergy in the complexities of administering religion to patients in a clinical setting.

The Colonial Gardens
The Colonial Gardens outside the Chapel of Hope was donated by Columbia’s Garden Club of South Carolina in 1967.
