This fight occurred with two African American male patients and several hundred white patients during a time when integration of the two races was just beginning to slowly happen in order for the institute to continue to obtain federal aid. Dr. Hall claimed that only three supervisors were on duty at the time because of "vacations and other factors" that had reduced the number of staff that particular day. One of the African American men was cut in the face and the other was unharmed. "A Columbia Negro group, the Richland Citizens Committe, has called the gradual plan inadequate and is opposing it." The integration plan is to take two to five years to fully integrate the hospital. "</text>

Hospitals were already overcrowded and this article seeks to answer questions pertaining to the increase of mental disorders in the United States. Dr Walsh was a psychologist at the University of South Carolina when this article was written. Dr. Walsh explains that "it is easier to prevent maladjustment and mental illness than it is to cure them." According to Dr. Walsh, parents and teachers have the greatest impact on a childs mental well being and he wants "to establish guidance clinics and other professional services vital for diagnosis and treatment of the more serious cases of maladjustment."</text>
