Title

The Columbia Record. Governor Byrnes Pleads for State Hospita

Description

"South Carolina's State hospital's most pressing needs are two: 1. Additional personnel. Employes of the medical department of the hospital are now working 60 to 72 hours a week. And their number, for this obvious reason, is insufficient-one doctor for every 445 patients, one nurse for every 290 patients, one attendant to every 18 patients.......2.Additional bed space." The article goes on to explain issues of building deterioration such as in the main kitchen which "was designed to feed 1,800 patients. It now handles food for more than 3,000." The kitchen is described as being one of the 'urgent' needs of the hospital along with "dormitory space for attendants in order to increase the treatment offered patients, and to provide required utilities."
