James Madison (1751-1836) was an American founder, fourth U.S. president, secretary of state, statesman, diplomat, and enslaver. He played a major role at the 1787 Constitutional Convention, which he helped organize. He was also a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, the Continental Congress, and the U.S. House of Representatives. Madison married Dolley Payne Madison in 1784.
