Henry Lee (1756-1818) was a lieutenant colonel in the American Revolution, member of the Virginia Assembly, U.S. Confederation Congress, House of Representatives, and governor of Virginia. He was born in Prince William County, Virginia, and was married twice, once to Matilda Ludwell Lee and then to Anne Hill Carter, with whom he would father Gen. Robert E. Lee. Late in his life he fell into severe debt and was placed in debtors prison. He fled the country, before returning to live in Georgia, where he died.
