Jean-Baptiste-Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau (1725-1807) was a French army officer who assisted with the siege of Yorktown, which brought about the end to the American Revolution. Afterwards, he returned to France and served as governor of Picardy. In 1792 he led the Armée du Nord against Austria. After a lackluster performance, he resigned. He was awaiting execution, after having been arrested and imprisoned during the Reign of Terror, when Robespierre was killed in 1794, and then the terror came to an end. Napoleon awarded him the Legion of Honour in 1804.
