John Hyndman ( - 1785) was born in Scotland, had moved to Williamsburg, Virginia by 1742, and operated a store near Hanover Town. He left for London around 1756, where he operated the merchant trading firm of Hyndman, Lancaster & Company with Richard Lancaster. When the latter died, the firm was renamed Hyndman & Company in 1774 and lasted until Hyndman's death in 1785, at which time the firm was taken over by his nephew Thomas Main.
