Peyton Short (1761-1825) was William Short's brother. He was born in Surry County, Virginia, attended the College of William and Mary, and eventually travelled to and moved permanently to Kentucky, where he became involved in local politics and helped found Transylvania University. Short was married twice, first to Maria Symmes, with whom he had three children, Charles, John, and Anna, and after her death to Jane Churchill, with whom he had Jane, Elizabeth, and Sarah. Throughout his life, Short proved inept at financial responsibilities, including handling his father's estate while brother William was in Paris, which led to their near estrangement. He died in Christian County, Kentucky, after having had to sell his home there due to near insolvency.
